What is NAO High School Excellence Award?

NAO has been awarding High School Excellence Award, since 2010.  This award is awarded to the high school graduate student from Nepali Community in Oregon and SW Washington every year. The goal of this award is to support the local Nepali student to complete the intended college degree.
We encourage all high school students— of the local Nepali community to do well in school and be involved in their community activities.
This year NAO will be awarding two students with the, “NAO High School Excellence Award”.  One award will go for the senior graduate of 2017 and the other award will be for the junior student who will be graduating in 2018.  
We would like to request all parents of current high school juniors and seniors to encourage their (sons/daughters) to apply for the award. Receiving this award will definitely make a difference in your college admission and scholarship.

What are the eligibility Requirements?

Applicants must have resided in either Oregon or Southwest Washington State for more than 6 months before the deadline of application.
1.     Applicants must be of Nepali heritage.
2.     Applicants must be a member of NAO.
3.     Applicants must have at least 3.0 Cumulative GPA.
4.     Applicants must be high school seniors for the 2017award, and the high school juniors for the 2018 award.
5.     Must provide High School transcript and a recommendation from a school teacher.

How do I apply for the Award?

All applicants are required to submit the following documents in a closed envelope to apply for the award:
  1. Transcripts: Official / unofficial transcript, with High School cumulative GPA, issued by their high school. Seniors must provide the transcript with the midterm grade of 12th grade, and juniors must provide the transcript with final grade of 11th grade.
  2.  Essay: Applicants must write a 500-750 words essay on one of the following three topics:
    1. Discuss how you will or have already used your diverse life experience and perspectives to contribute to the community you live in. OR
    2. Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. OR
    3. Describe about your future goal/s and the challenges you will potentially face to achieve your goal/s. Explain how you will face those challenges to achieve your goal/s. Describe how your dream will help the community you are living with.
  3. Resume: Particularly focusing on current standing in school and extracurricular activities; including community participation and voluntary services.
  4. Letter of Recommendation: A letter of recommendation from high school teacher. Teacher’s Evaluation Form must be signed by School Counselor. Please download the Teacher Evaluation Form
  5. NAO Membership: The status of NAO membership will be verified by the NAO Executive Committee.
    Selection Criteria: The applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:

    High School GPA 50%
    Essay 25%
    Volunteer/Community Participation 20%
    Recommendation 5%
    Total 100%

     In evaluating applicant’s high school GPA, a weighting scale will be applied to account for Honors (H), Advance Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses.
